France, IV Republic. An Order of Sporting Merit, I Class Commander, c.1960
(Ordre du Mérite Sportif). Instituted in 1956. In bronze gilt with cerulean blue enamels, dual cornucopia hallmarked and marked with a "1" between the cornucopias on the edge, measuring 42.8 mm (w) x 57.2 mm (h) inclusive of its integral suspension, unique conjoined dual loop suspension, chipping and loss evident in the cerulean blue enamels between the left wing and the angel's body, scattered gilt wear, on its original full-length ribbon with dual prong pinback, better than very fine.
The Order of Sport Merit was created on July 6, 1956, but was later replaced by the National Order of Merit on December 3, 1963.
It was awarded for important contributions to the development of sport and physical education in France and French colonies. The Knight was awarded to recipients of the Silver Medal of Honour of Youth and Sports, and the Officer was awarded to recipients of the Gold Medal of Honour of Youth and Sports. Knights could be promoted to Officer after 5 years and Officers could be promoted to Commander after 8 years.
The obverse inscription translates to “Sport Merit,” and the reverse inscription translates to “French Republic.”
