History

The Order of Sport Merit was created on July 6, 1956, but was later replaced by the National Order of Merit on December 3, 1963.

It was awarded for important contributions to the development of sport and physical education in France and French colonies. The Knight was awarded to recipients of the Silver Medal of Honour of Youth and Sports, and the Officer was awarded to recipients of the Gold Medal of Honour of Youth and Sports. Knights could be promoted to Officer after 5 years and Officers could be promoted to Commander after 8 years.

The obverse inscription translates to “Sport Merit,” and the reverse inscription translates to “French Republic.”
