History
The George IV Coronation Medal was instituted in 1821 in commemoration of the Coronation of King George IV on July 19, 1821. The Medal was distributed amongst attendants and the crowd during the Coronation ceremony. The Medal was issued in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Gold Medals were presented to members of the royal family, Silver Medals were distributed to esteemed peers of the royal household and members of parliament, and Bronze Medals were thrown to the crowd. It is estimated that 1060 Gold, 800 Silver and over 1 525 Bronze Medals were issued.
The Medal features a Latin inscription on the reverse that translates to "Already by Special Right, Inaugurated in the Spirit of His Father."
There is an additional version of the Medal which was issued to members of the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry Cavalry Hussars which is of a smaller size, features a suspension, and is worn from a plain maroon ribbon.
