History
The National Order of Côte d'Ivoire was established shortly after the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire declared independence from France in 1960. It is conferred upon Ivorians in recognition of meritorious services rendered to the nation. Members of the Order must be at least 30 years old and have rendered a minimum of 15 years of excellent public service, or 20 years of excellent private-sector service. These regulations may be waived, but only under exceptional circumstances such as posthumous conferral or conferral upon foreigners.
All members are received into the Order as Knights. Promotion to Officer may be made after 5 years, promotion to Commander may be made after 4 years, promotion to Grand Officer may be made after 3 years, and promotion to Grand Cross may be made after 3 years.
The Collar is worn exclusively by the President of the Republic who acts as Grand Master. It is composed of 16 gilt medallions, 14 of which depict scenes from everyday life, and two of which depict the national crest. Every medallion is inscribed with a list of previous Grand Masters on the reverse. The badge appendant features an obverse inscription that translates to "Republic of Ivory Coast," and a reverse inscription that translates to "Unity, Discipline, Labour."
