This Medal was established by Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1944. It was awarded to military personnel in recognition of meritorious service in the campaign against the Italian invasion from 1936-1941. Every additional year of service is denoted by a torch clasp. 
The obverse and reverse feature Amharic inscriptions that can be translated to "Gold is Tested by Fire," and "Hope established in faith is a proven instrument of victory," respectively.
