History
This Order was established by Emperor Yohannes IV in 1874. It was discontinued as a state award following the collapse of the Empire in 1974, but it is currently awarded as a dynastic order by the Crown Council of Ethiopia.
It was conferred upon members of the Imperial Family, foreign heads of state, and others for outstanding service to Ethiopia and the Imperial Family.
The Order was limited to 10 Grand Crosses, 20 Grand Officers, 25 Commanders, 35 Officers, and 45 Knights, but today only the Grand Cross is awarded.
There may be additional versions of the Officer that differ in the design of the crown, as well as the manufacturer, size, or composition.
