History

This Order was instituted by President William V. S. Tubman of Liberia in commemoration of the "Original Pioneers" - the former slaves that founded Liberia.

It is conferred upon Liberian and foreign citizens for outstanding service in the fields of government, art, science, business, religion, international affairs, philanthropy, and heroism and valour.

This Order is formally known as the Grand Order of the Most Venerable Order of the Knighthood of the Pioneers of the Republic of Liberia.
