Sierra Leone


The Republic of Sierra Leon is a country on the southwest coast of West Africa. It is bounded by Guinea, Liberia and the Atlantic Ocean. Sierra Leon has a population of 7 million people. The capital and largest city is Freetown. The official language is English.

Sierra Leon is one of the top 10 diamond producing nations in the world. Moreover, the country is heavily in debt and struggling with great poverty.

The small country has been inhabited now for at least 2,500 years by settlers from various parts of Africa. In the 19th century Senegal was declared a British Crown Colony. Sierra Leone gained its independence from Freat Britain on April 27th, 1961. After a decade of bloody civil war that claimed tens of thousands of lives, the country has been busy rebuilding and revising recent history since 2000.

The total military strength amounts to about 13,000 volunteers, there is no compulsory military service.

The Order of Bravery was the highest title.
