This star was conferred upon Officers of the Bophuthatswana Prisons Service in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service.

The Bophuthatswana Prisons Service was established in 1977 and was assimilated into the Department of Correctional Services in 1994; therefore, Bophuthatswana Prisons Service decorations and medals became discontinued in 1994.
