History

This medal was conferred upon Officers of the Citizen Force of the Union of South Africa in recognition of meritorious service.

It was replaced by the John Chard Decoration in 1952.

The obverse of the suspension bar is inscribed "UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA UNIE VAN SUID-AFRIKA". The reverse of the suspension bar features a silver hallmark.
