History

This star was conferred upon Senior Officers of the South African National Intelligence Service (NIS) in recognition of outstanding leadership, service, and an exceptional contribution to national security.

The NIS was established in July 1981 and became obsolete in 1994; therefore, NIS decorations and medals became discontinued in December 1994.
