History
Established by Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1868, the Medal for Humaitá was awarded to Brazilian military personnel who opened up the passage of the Paraná River, defeating Paraguayan forces during the War of the Triple Alliance (1865-1870).
The Medal was awarded with three classes according to the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was awarded to Generals, Silver Medal was conferred upon Officers, and the Bronze Medal was granted to enlisted men.
