Created by Dom Pedro in 1867, the Medal for Matto Grosso was awarded in recognition of the Brazilian military personnel who fought an extended campaign against Paraguayan forces along the Paraguayan border.

The Medal was created with three classes according to the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was awarded to Chiefs, the Silver Medal was conferred upon Officer, and the Zinc Medal was for enlisted men.
