History

The Second Pernambuco Cross, a.k.a. Second Distinguished Medal (Segunda Medalha de Distinção Aos Mais Bravos - A Insignia de Ouro de Distinção em Combate), was authorized by imperial decree on October 20, 1824, for the army, and on January 22, 1825, for the navy. It was created to reward military personnel for their bravery and courage during the repression of the Brazilian provinces which declared a separate republic state in 1824.

The Cross was authorized with a unique grade, the Gold Medal.

The Medals were struck in Rio de Janerio and Recife; those are distinguished by their inscription.
