History

The Salado Medal (Medalla del Salado) was established by the Province of Buenos Aires on July 23, 1830 in recognition of Colonel Angel Pacheco, Chiefs, and Officers, who defeated to Ranquel Indian forces at El Salado on April 10, 1830.

This Medal was part of the awards bestowed for the Desert Campaigns in Argentina. The Desert Campaigns were military expeditions against native Indian tribes for land, and were one of the first issues of the Argentinian government after the Independence War.

The composition of this Medal denotes the rank of the recipient; the Gold Medal was awarded to Chiefs and Generals, and the Silver Medal was awarded to Officers.

The Gold Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "To the Victors at El Salado April 10, 1830," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to “Colonel Mr. Angel Pacheco, Chief Commander of the Department of the North.”

The Silver Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to “To the Victors at El Salado April 10, 1830.”
