History
The Sauce Grande Medal (Medalla del Sauce Grande) was established by General Manuel Rosas by decree on December 17, 1840. It was awarded to General Pascual Echagüe, governor of Entre Rios Provinces, and his troops who defeated to unitarian General Juan Lavalle and his army at Sauce Grande on July 16, 1840.
The composition of this Medal denotes the rank of the recipient; the Gold and Silver Medals were conferred upon Officers and Chiefs, while the Copper Medal was awarded to enlisted men.
The Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "¡Long Live to Argentine Confederation! He Fought for the American Freedom, Honor as part of the Brave Victorious Army in the Field of Sauce Grande,” and a reverse inscription that can be translated to “¡Death for the Savage Unitarians! July 16, 1840, The Governor of the Argentine Confederation to Patriotism and Courage.”
