History
The Medal for Abtao (Medalla por la Batalla del Abtao) was instituted by the government of Bolivia on June 23, 1866. It was awarded in recognition of the Chilean and Peruvian forces who defended the Bolivian pacific cost against to an invading Spanish fleet at Abtao on February 7, 1866.
It is not clear if the composition of this Medal denotes the rank of the recipient.
There are known two different designs of this Medal; a roundish Medal, and a Cross.
The Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "Bolivia to the Winners of Abtao," and a reverse inscription that translates to "in the Journey of February 7, 1866." The suspension inscription translates to "Long Live to Chile."
