History

The Southern Army Medal (Medalla del Ejército del Sur) was established by the government of Bolivia in 1838, in recognition of the troops under command of General Andrés de Santa Cruz, who defended the south of Bolivia against Argentinian assault troops in 1838.

It is not clear if the composition of the Medal denotes the rank of the recipient.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Courage, Loyalty and Constancy," and a reverse inscription that translates to "In Honor of the Southern Army 1838."
