History

The National Order of Scientific Merit (Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico) was established by presidential decree on March 16, 1993. It is awarded to Brazilian and foreign individuals in recognition of distinguished achievements that have contributed to the development of science and technology in Brazil.

The Order's grades are Grand Cross limited to 200, Commander limited to 500, and Silver Medal for institutions.

The Order recognizes the work of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silver (1763-1838), who was a naturalist, geologist, professor, poet, and minister of foreign affairs during the government of Pedro I.
