The Order of Merit for Defense (Ordem do Mérito da Defesa) was established by presidential decree on June 10, 2002, replacing the Order of Merit of the Armed Forces. It is awarded in recognition of Brazilian or foreign, civil and military personnel, for outstanding services rendered to the military and armed forces in defense of the country. In order of precedence, it is the second-most important award in the country.
The Order's grades are Grand Cross limited to 20, Grand Officer limited to 90, Commander limited to 170, Officer limited to 190, and Knight limited to 280. It might be awarded to institutions.
When awarded to a woman, this Order is suspended from a bow ribbon.
