History

The Order of the Three Military Orders (Banda das Três Ordens) was created in November 1789 as a special honorific decoration to bestow the Grand Master of the military Order of St. Benedict of Aviz, Order of St. James of the Sword, and Order of Christ, at the time that they were sharing the same council.

Since Napoleonic era, the Order distinguished the Grand Master of the three Military Orders, Grand Masters of another orders, and Head of States, as an honorific decoration consisted of a sash badge and a breast star.

When King João I/John I of Portugal arrived to Brazil in 1807, he was the Grand Master Order of the three Military Orders. While ruling from Rio de Janeiro, he created knights of this Order among the new royal society of Brazil.

The Order was annulled in Brazil by the republican government in 1890.

The Brazilian line of the Order features the Imperial Brazilian Crown.
