The Order Pedro Joaquín Chamorro was established by the government of Violeta Chamorro on April 8, 1991. It is awarded to Nicaraguan and foreign civilians who have performed extraordinary services in defense of democracy and liberty.

Pedro Joaquín Chamorro was a Nicaraguan journalist and publisher. He was the owner and editor of La Prensa, which was the only significant opposition newspaper to the Somoza family during the Civil War. His assassination in 1979 precipitating the events of the overthrow of the Somoza regime the following year. He married Violeta Barrios de Chamorro who later went on to become President of Nicaragua (1990-1996).
