History

The Order of the Peruvian Cross for Military Merit (Cruz Peruana al Mérito Militar) was instituted in 1949 to reward members of the Peruvian Armed Forces for meritorious service in the defense of the country.

The grades of the Order are Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The Grand Cross may be embellished with brilliants for extraordinary bestowals.

The Order was named in honor of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi (1816-1880) who commanded the Peruvian forces during the Pacific War (1879-1884), when he died defending the city of Arica from Chilean attack. He had an outstanding military career defending Peru during the years of service. He is considered national hero, and he was named Patron of the Army by the Peruvian government in 1951.

An official known maker is Zuloeta S.A., Lima.
