History

The Order of Honor for Naval Merit (Orden de Honor del Mérito Naval Comandante Pedro Campbell) was established in 1980 by the military junta that ruled Uruguay at that time. It was awarded to civilians and military personnel, and institutions, both national and foreign, who had performed important service to the country's navy.

Presumably, the Order's grades were two, i.e., Grand Medal and Medal. The Order was officially rescinded on March 6, 1985. However, some sources claim that the Order has never ceased to be granted.

It is unknown the current status of this Order.

Commander Pedro Campbell (1780-1832) was an Irish soldier who joined the British army and participated in the assault on Buenos Aires and Montevideo in 1807. Campbell deserted and joined the revolutionary army of General José Artigas until his death in 1832. He is known as the Irish Gaucho.
