History

The Order of Police Merit (Orden del Mérito Policial) was instituted by Presidential Decree on November 27, 1997. It is awarded to Salvadoran members of the National Police killed or seriously wounded in the line of duty. It is also awarded to national and foreign citizens for exceptional services rendered to the police force.

It is awarded with three classes; I Class, II Class, and III Class. It is not clear of the class denotes the rank of the recipient.
