The Order of Hermano Pedro de San Jose Betancourt was founded in Guatemala on June 27, 1958. It is conferred upon national or foreign citizens in recognition of outstanding contributions in the fields of philanthropic and humanitarian services.
The Order was named after Hermano Pedro de San Jose Betancourt (1626-1667), a Spanish missionary in Guatemala who devoted his life to the services of the poor the relief of suffering. He was the founder of the first convalescent hospital and the first popular school for children and adults, as well as he was the initiator of a hospitality movement for foreigners, priests and students.
The Order is awarded once a year on April 25.
