The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal was instituted on August 25, 1985, and received Royal Patent on August 29, 1985, by Queen Elizabeth II. The Medal is conferred upon individuals who have completed 20 years of good and meritorious service as a member of the Canadian Fire Departments, Fire Marshals' Offices, and/or Fire Commissioners' Offices.
The obverse of the Medal features a pair of crossed axes, superimposed over a maple leaf. A maltese cross surmounted by a fire hydrant in centered. The inscription reads [EXEMPLARY SERVICE. SERVICES DISTINGUES]. The reverse features the Royal Cipher [EIIR] surmounted by a crown.
Additional Bars with a maple leaf may be conferred to recognize subsequent periods of service of 10 years.
The award be be presented posthumously if the individual died in the performance of their duties.
