This medal is awarded to Canadian civilians, police personnel, and Canadian Force members for service overseas wherein they directly supported operations or served in dangerous situations.

There are specific ribbons are awarded along with the medal to indicate the task or theatre of operation of the recipient.

The South-West Asia ribbon features red and white stripes flanking a central gold section.

The Sierra Leone ribbon features red and white stripes flanking a central bright green section.

The Haiti ribbon features red and white stripes flanking a central blue section.

The Sudan ribbon features red and white stripes flanking a central dark green section.

The Humanitas ribbon features red stripes flanking a central white section.

The Expedition ribbon features red and white stripes flanking a central gray section.

The ribbon may also feature Rotation Bars, which are awarded for each period of 180 days of service following the conferral of the medal.
