History

The Queen’s Medal for Champion Shot in Canada was instituted on August 28, 1991. It is awarded to one member of the Canadian Armed Forces and one member of either the Canadian Reserve Forces or the RCMP who received the highest score in the Queen’s Medal Competition. It is based upon the British medal, instituted in 1869, which can be awarded to any member of the Armed Forces. From 1954 to 1967 the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) had their own Queen's Medal.

The medal was designed by Bruce Beatty. The obverse features the profile of Queen Elizabeth II along with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA CANADA. The reverse bears the mythological goddess Pheme holding a trumpet and a crown. Beside her stands a warrior holding a bow and arrow, and target pierced in the centre by three arrows.

The year the medal is awarded is engraved on a bar worn on the red, black and white ribbon. Bars can be added for each additional victory.
