This medal may be conferred posthumously to Canadian Forces personnel who have died due to military service after October 6, 2001.

It is also awarded to Canadian Forces personnel who have been injured as a direct result of hostile actions.

If the recipient is injured subsequent times, they may be awarded a bar.
