The Somalia medal was established in 1992 to recognize members of the Canadian Forces who took part in the mission to stabilize Somalia from civil war and deliver humanitarian aid.

Any individual associated with the Canadian Forces may be awarded this medal if they served a minimum of 90 cumulative days of honourable service in Somalia between November 16, 1992 and June 30,1993. They are not eligible if they received another medal recognizing this service.

The obverse features three maple leaves, above which is inscribed the word "CANADA". The revere features the Royal Cypher, inscribed with "SOMALIA SOMALIE 1992-93",

The medal shall be worn in sequence prescribed in the Canadian Orders, Decorations and Medals Directive; suspended on the left breast, between the Gulf and Kuwait Medal and the South-West Asia Service Medal.
