History

The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador was established on May 24, 2001, and had its first investiture on September 8, 2004. It is conferred to individuals who have demonstrated high achievement and performed extraordinary services positively impacting the residents of the province. It is the province's highest honour.

The obverse of the Order features Newfoundland and Labrador's floral emblem, the pitcher plant; its petals are composed of Labradorite, the provincial mineral, edged in gold. The obverse features the white, red, and gold enamelled Arms of the Province surmounted by a gold crown.

Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominals "ONL."

Residents of other provinces are eligible to receive honorary appointments. Posthumous nominations will not be considered.
