History

The Order of Nova Scotia was proposed on March 28, 2001, and instituted in June 2001. It is awarded to residents who have displayed meritorious service to their communities for the greater good of the province.

The medal is a stylized white enamel Mayflower, the provincial floral emblem, edged in gold and green enamel. The Nova Scotian shield of arms is centred and surmounted with a crown. The reverse features the medals number of issue. Awardees also receive a semi-formal medal and a lapel pin.

Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominals "ONS."

The Chancellor of the Order is the acting Lieutenant Governor, who remains a member for life. There are two levels, Chancellor and Member, however, the medal remains the same regardless of level.

All residents of Nova Scotia are eligible to receive the award, with the exception of elected officials while in office. Posthumous awards may be conferred if the individual is nominated within a year of their passing.
