History

The Art & Science Medal (Medalla al Mérito Artístico y Científico) was authorized in Mexico by Maximiliano I in recognition of merit in the fields of art and science.

It is not clear if the composition of the Medal denotes the service rendered by the recipient.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Maximilian I Emperor of Mexico," and a reverse inscription that translates to "To the Artistic and Scientific Merit."
