History

The Order of the Mexican Eagle (Orden del Águila Mexicana) was created by Emperor Maximiliano I/Maximilian I on January 1, 1865. It was founded as an effort to reach prestige among European monarchies, in order to obtain concessions and diplomatic recognition for the new Mexican Empire.

The Order was awarded to citizens and military personnel, in recognition of outstanding merit and extraordinary services to the State and the Emperor.

The grades of the Order were: Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.

The motto of the Order is "Equity in Justice."

The Order was awarded mainly to noble foreign recipients from European monarchies. It was extinguished soon after Maximilian I was exiled and executed in 1867.

The Collar was limited to twelve (12) bestowals, and it was conferred exclusively to Maximilian I and other Monarchs.

The links of the Collar feature the cypher of Maximilianum Imperator Mexicanum "M M I".

The market value of this Order is based on the quality of manufacture and composition. The piece with emerald, gems, or diamonds, are fairly common in the market.
