History

The Royal Household Order for Ladies was an active Order during King Kalakaua’s coronation (1883), noted by a photograph of the Badge of the Order on Princess Poomaikelani’s shoulder. It was awarded to female family members of the Kalakaua Dynasty to demonstrate a close familial relationship to the throne. Medcalf’s Book of Hawaiian Money Standards (2nd ed.) states that there were likely less than 6 conferred.

The Badge of the Order has KULIA I KA NUU inscribed, Queen Kapiolani’s motto “strive to the summit.” It is worn from the shoulder, suspended by a red bow.
