History

The Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award was created by the Secretary of the Navy as an award for civilians employed by the Department of the Navy. The Medal is awarded in recognition of distinguished or extraordinary service which far exceeds the normal expectations of duty. Such examples of qualifying service include a pattern of sustained high performance, career achievements, innovative leadership, scientific or technical advances, management, and other accomplishments which in some way benefit the Department of the Navy. Acts of heroism may also be eligible for the award of the Medal.
