History

The Armed Forces Civilian Service Medal was created by the United States Department of Defense on August 22, 1997, to recognize the contributions of Department of Defense civilian employees who have directly supported military forces and who were engaged in military operations of a prolonged peacekeeping or humanitarian nature. The Medal is awarded to civilian employees for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days of service in a designated theatre of operations since June 1, 1992.

Bronze service stars are authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal.
