The Global War on Terrorism Civilian Service Medal, also known as the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism, was authorized by the United States Department of Defense on August 9, 2007. The Medal is awarded to Department of Defense civilian personnel in recognition of contributions and accomplishments in operations to combat terrorism since September 11, 2001. To qualify for the award, recipients must have provided 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days of direct support in a United States military global war on terrorism operation in a designated geographic area. Service cut short due to wounds or death inflicted during service in the designated operation is also eligible for the award of the Medal.
