History

The Secretary of Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award is awarded by the Office of the Secretary of Defense to career civilian employees of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Department of Defense, and the Federal government. The Medal is awarded in recognition of 3 years of exceptional service provided to the Department of Defense.

Subsequent awards of the Medal are denoted by a bronze, silver, or gold palm device worn on the ribbon.
