History
The Congressional Space Medal of Honor was authorized by Public Law on September 29, 1969, as the highest honour awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Gold Star is conferred by the President of the United States in the name of Congress to any astronaut serving with NASA in recognition of exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service or extraordinary accomplishments while participating in NASA space flights which significantly contributes to the welfare of the United States and mankind. Eligible service may include scientific discoveries or actions which are of great benefit to mankind, as well as extreme bravery during a space emergency or in the prevention of a space disaster. Both civilian and military personnel are eligible for the award. To date, 28 Stars have been awarded.
The Star is also awarded posthumously to all astronauts who were killed while serving on a United States space mission. 17 awards have been made posthumously.
There may be different ribbon suspension styles issued with the Star.
