History
The NASA Exceptional Service Medal was authorized on May 1, 1957. The Bronze Medal was originally awarded to United States government employees in recognition of sustained performance, significant scientific achievement, significant leadership in aeronautical science, and significant contributions to public administration. Acts of courage and competence in an emergency as well as initiative and creative actions which improve engineering, aeronautics, space flights or other NASA programs may also be recognized by the award of the Medal. Astronaut contributions as space flight crewmembers qualify upon the successful completion of the second or third flight. In 1961, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal was shortly replaced by the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, and Exceptional Bravery Medal until 1964, when it was reinstated and made available to reward any individual serving in any capacity with NASA.
