The NASA Space Flight Medal was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1981. Civilian employees and military astronauts who have actually flown in outer space are eligible for the award.
A silver Space Flight Cluster is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent flights. A gold Space Flight Cluster is awarded to denote the 5 silver Space Flight Clusters.
