History
The National Security Medal was established by President Harry S. Truman by Executive Order on January 19, 1953. The Medal was initially awarded to American and foreign civilian personnel in recognition of distinguished achievement and outstanding contributions to national security intelligence since July 26, 1947. In 2015, the award was extended to also reward members of the United States Armed Forces for exceptionally meritorious service and achievement in a position of high responsibility in the field of national security. The Medal may also be awarded for acts of courageous heroism that disregard personal safety.
An oak leaf cluster emblem is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal.
