History

The Air Force Achievement Medal was established by the Secretary of the Air Force in October 1980. The Silver Medal was created to recognize achievements of junior Officers and enlisted men who are ineligible to receive a higher decoration. The Medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement or courage demonstrated in both combat or non-combat zones.

Bronze or silver oak leaf emblems may be worn on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards and since 1996, a bronze "V" may be worn on the ribbon to signify awards made in recognition of service during a hazardous situation resulting from hostilities.
