History

The Coast Guard Medal was authorized on August 4, 1949, but it was not awarded until 1958. The Medal rewards members of the Armed Forces of the United States or foreign allies who served in any capacity with the United States Coast Guard for distinguished acts of voluntary heroism involving the risk of personal life that exceeds normal expectations outside of situations of combat.

The reverse inscription of the Coast Guard Medal states "FOR HEROISM".
