History
The Navy and Marine Corps Medal was established by Public Law on August 7, 1942, as an award for non-combat acts of bravery. The Bronze Medal is awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps for acts of non-combat heroism which involves a specific life-threatening risk to the recipient since December 6, 1941. The Medal was originally awarded to any holder of a letter of commendation made for heroism from the secretary of the Navy. The Medal is currently the senior peacetime award for heroism. A notable recipient of the award is John F. Kennedy, who received the award in recognition of the rescue of his fellow crewmen after the sinking of his boat.
Gold or silver star emblems may be worn on the ribbon to denote additional awards.
The Medal is officially engraved on the reverse for posthumous awards only. Privately engraved versions of the Medal may be encountered.
