History

The medal was instituted in 1966 by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and it was redesigned by King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 1999.

The medal is conferred upon Bhutanese and foreign citizens for outstanding service to the King, Country, and Bhutanese people. The medal is viewed as the most honourable civil award.

This medal is also known as the Son of the Heart of the Thunder Dragon Medal.
