History

This Order was founded by King Jigme Dorji Wangchu, and it was originally known as "Druk Gyal Khorlo" or Order of the Wheel of the Dragon Kingdom.

The Order is conferred in recognition of national services that benefit Bhutan, the King, and the Bhutanese people.

It was originally instituted as the fourth highest civilian Order within the Bhutanese honour system.

In 2008 the Order system was amended by King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, and this Order was lowered to fifth highest national award.

The current Order is also known as the Order of the Wheel of the Thunder Dragon.
