History

This Order was instituted as a single class in February 1905 for Cambodians, French protected subjects, and others. It was expanded to 3 classes on September 9, 1948, and then to 5 classes in 1961. It was reinstated in 1995.

This Order is conferred upon individuals in recognition of outstanding services in literature, the fine arts, education, administration, justice, and science.
