This medal was conferred upon foreign soldiers in recognition of service in the Taiping Rebellion from 1850 to 1864. It was primarily awarded to French soldiers.

There were approximately 20-40 gold medals and 100-400 silver medals manufactured in China.

The reverse Chinese characters translate to "Military", "Merit", "Praise", and "Sign".
